bees/i love you

via Pitchfork

"It's fake authenticity," the Inspector would declare. "It's like all the architects imitating Greek friezes and columns in The Fountainhead, while Howard Roark went out and made true heroic buildings that actually belonged to his time. This one's a pretty love song, though... The Temptations meet The Penguins."

"It's called 'I Love You'," Otterloo would reply, stooping over his antediluvian record player.

roommate/night

this album.. was terrible. i mean, bad. it's the kind of thing that if you bought the album for one particular song, you would be embarrassed to let your friends see it. on top of that, i've never taken the time to listen to the original track by rhombus, and i don't think i ever will.

Let's eliminate the downtime

antlers/jessie baylin/owen pallett

The Antlers - i don't want love

via pitchfork

"I Don't Want Love" emerges from the morning-after fallout between friends with benefits, only without the friendship: something has clearly gone wrong, but Silberman doesn't sound accusatory: "I let you inside/ So you can push me around." Now a full-fledged trio, the Antlers reflect the situation's fragility in the music, an even-keeled flow of lingering guitar chords backing a melody that's forthright, yet trying to let everyone down easy. The mere mention of the title on the chorus is the big moment, as Silberman lets it hang for everyone to take it all in. It's understandable that the Antlers would be hungover from the gnarly bloodletting of Hospice; "I Don't Want Love" is less a rejection of physical pleasure than a subtly gripping call for emotional sobriety.

john maus/elite gymnastics

Your heart perhaps but what price the fellow in the six feet by two with his toes to the daisies? No touching that. Seat of the affections. Broken heart. A pump after all, pumping thousands of gallons of blood every day. One fine day it gets bunged up: and there you are. Lots of them lying around here: lungs, hearts, livers. Old rusty pumps: damn the thing else. The resurrection and the life.

Once you are dead you are dead.

Mountain Man/Joanna Newsom

"Y’all have been called the “female Fleet foxes” by several rock critics, was that ever in the running for a potential band name?

No, that was never considered. We did almost name ourselves “Balloon Animal Vagina,” because we found one of those weird balloon animals on the street in New York City, you know, the things that clowns make, and it looked like a vagina. Also, we thought we were going to call our first record Terrorizes the Nation, so we thought “Balloon Animal Vagina Terrorizes the Nation” would be a pretty funny title."

Monument Valley - Dear John Letters

my grandparents were married for over sixty years when my grandmother died. i think about that sometimes when i'm feeling cynical and depressed (which is quite often it seems). then, i see my grandfather alone at the table, and i realize that he's set silverware out next to him in the place she used to sit.

Mario Castro Neves & Samba SA - Candomble

"Candomblé (Portuguese pronunciation: [kɐ̃dõˈblɛ]) is an African-originated or Afro-Brazilian religion, practised chiefly in Brazil by the "povo de santo" (people of saint). It originated in the cities of Salvador, the capital of Bahia and Cachoeira, at the time one of the main commercial crossroads for the distribution of products and slave trade to other parts of Bahia state in Brazil. Although Candomblé is practiced primarily in Brazil, it is also practiced in other countries in the Americas, including Uruguay, Argentina, Venezuela, Colombia, Panama; and in Europe in Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain. The religion is based in the anima (soul) of Nature, and is also known as Animism. It was developed in Brazil with the knowledge of African Priests that were enslaved and brought to Brazil, together with their mythology, their culture and language, between 1549 and 1888.
The rituals involve the possession of the initiated by Orishas, offerings and sacrifices of the mineral, vegetable and animal kingdom, healing, dancing/trance and percussion. Candomblé draws inspiration from a variety of people of the African Diaspora, but it mainly features aspects of Yoruba orisha veneration."

Deltron 3030 - 3030

One of the most epic groups ever created: Dan The Automator, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, and Kid Koala. A post-apocalyptic future where the main character raps about his adventures on earth and space might sound like a gimmick... but that's the point.
